AMA PRO SUPERBIKE SERIES
ROUNDS 8-9/JULY 20, 2014
MID-OHIO SPORTS CAR COURSE/LEXINGTON, OHIO
P84
lose my data for the next race so
I kind of put it on cruise control
so we could make the bike a little
better for the second race. That
race was really our first real prac-
tice being here on the new bike."
Hayden's hopes for a better
second race did not materialize. At
least he fared better than Carde-
nas, who crashed from fourth at
the end of the back straight in the
race's opening laps.
Still, Hayden was bitterly dis-
appointed after finding himself
again helpless as his Yamaha-
mounted rivals raced off into the
distance.
The Kentuckian actually made
up a bit of ground on Hayes and
Beaubier at one point, slashing
his deficit from around two sec-
onds to about a second-and-a-
half, but he nearly crashed in a
series of corners attempting to
maintain that pace. After that he
again decided it wiser to back it
down and eased his way to his
second podium result on the day.
After taking a pair of thirds - with
margins of 11.456 and 21.805
seconds separating him from
first - Hayden admitted, "Third
place is not bad when you're bat-
tling for the win, but when you're
however many seconds back it's
not very satisfying. I don't know…
I'm having trouble keeping up off
the corners and on the straights.
I'm just riding so far above what I
can do every lap and I just start
making mistakes. We have some
tests lined up and we need to
make things a little better and
hopefully at New Jersey make a
race out of it. It's kind of embar-
rassing to finish that far back two
races in one day."
Cardenas' second-race crash
opened up a spot for Chris Fill-
more, who ran a pair of lonely
rides to register fifth and fourth-
place results on the KTM/HMC
Racing RC8R.
Behind Fillmore were a couple
decent scraps involving third
Yosh pilot Chris Clark, Foremost
Insurance Pegram Racing's Larry
Pegram, ADR Motorsports/Sic/
Motul Fly Racing's David Antho-
ny, and TOBC Racing's Taylor
Knapp, albeit more than a half-
minute behind the Hayes/Beau-
bier epics.
Clark used the horsepower of
his Yoshimura-tuned Suzuki GSX-
R to come out on top of those bat-
tles both times out. Combined with
Anthony's worst results of the sea-
son - a pair of sevenths after being
forced to ride without electronics
due to the compacted schedule -
Clark has moved to within 11 points
of the Australian for fourth in the
championship order with just the
finale remaining. CN
