on the short and fast track, you
couldn't take your eyes off it for
the 25 laps. The Washington fans
definitely got a lot of bang for
their bucks.
First they needed a little coop-
eration from Mother Nature. Rain
and heavy mist made for unsuit-
able race conditions on Saturday
night, despite the many efforts
from the AMA crew and promoter
D&W Racing's staff, but fortu-
nately promoter Dan Cooley was
willing to run it Sunday afternoon.
Even though it was a surface
that didn't play into his strengths,
Smith made a strong bid for the
win, leading for a good part of the
race, before Mees took the lead
with around five laps to go.
"If I had been a little closer he
[Mees] definitely messed up off
of turn two on the last lap get-
ting a little excited," Smith said.
"Man, if I could've been just a
little bit closer I could've shoved it
underneath him going into three.
But a day late and a dollar short
on that one. But I'll take it. This
isn't my type of track. So to leave
there with a second, second in
the points, still five out [behind
Mees] going into one of my favor-

Smith (42).
