"It was his efforts and dedication that brought
the return of Grand National Championship racing
back to Northern California."
Digger Helm
I recently finished your current
issue, and landed on page 135
with the article about Digger
Helm (Archives, Issue 28, July
15). After reading it, I thought,
"what a great guy, not to men-
tion, story."
So, I continue on to the next
page, and I see the Looking
Back section – and the bottom,
where one may subscribe to
nearly 50 years of Cycle News
Archives. After clicking on the
link, I am taken to the Archives
page.
Heck, lets take a gander
at the earliest available issue,
which happens to be Janu-
ary 13, 1970.Oh, man, cool oil
painting on the cover. I flip to
the innards…
And under the page three
Cycle News banner is a Guest
Editorial.
It's about the risk of motorcy-
cle racing, and is well written,
direct and correct.
Hmmm, who wrote this?
Some feller named Digger
Helm.

Sacto Mile
It's great that Steve McLaughlin
and crew have resurrected the
previously canceled Sacra-
mento Mile. We will be there,
and now Calistoga as well. But
kudos must also be given to
Bob Bellino.
It was his efforts and dedi-
cation that brought the return
of Grand National Champion-
ship racing back to Northern
California. The two Calistoga
Half Miles and thereafter the
Santa Rosa Miles were well run
and exciting (bad weather last
year notwithstanding). We saw
Bob at many motorcycle events
personally promoting his races.
Hopefully, we'll still see Bob at
the track.

Hancock Kudos
It's after midnight here in Car-
diff, Wales and I couldn't sleep
without putting my two pence
worth in about the victory we
witnessed tonight at the British
Speedway Grand Prix. Greg
Hancock proved again why
he is legendary. Taking on the
young guns Tai Woffinden,
Darcy Ward, and Krzysztof
Kasprzak - who are 20 years
younger than him - to a stun-
ning win in the final.
The ride was nothing less
than spectacular coming from
gate four around the outside
and battling the entire race. He
was something to see. What
I'm getting to is.... We know
MotoGP has a legend in the
making, but how about a cover
for this true speedway legend.
Thanks, Cycle News.

Laguna World Supers
Thanks for sharing your superb
coverage of the World Super-
bike races at Laguna Seca. I
was so glad I was able to make
it down on Sunday. Fantastic
competition and very light
crowds - a relief from what I'm
used to with MotoGP.
