Evel Knievel was pictured on the cover 40 years ago as we pumped up his
upcoming jump of the Snake River in Idaho… We got plenty excited about
Gary Scott's third straight Dirt Track National win at the Ascot TT, where
he took another bite out of Kenny Roberts' points lead… Factory CZ rider
Zdenek Velky won the second round of the Inter-AMA MX (250cc) round at
Mid-Ohio; Tim Hart won the 125 National
class… We tested the latest 360cc moto-
cross bike from Penton.
30 Years Ago August 1, 1984
Factory KTM rider Heinz Kinigadner was featured on the cover 30 years
ago to accompany our interview of the 250cc World Motocross points
leader… After winning the Laguna Seca National Road Race, Kenny
Roberts announced his retirement from professional racing, saying, "This
is it, I guess;" Fred Merkel won the AMA Sportbike class over Sam Mc-
Donald… David Bailey, Rick Johnson and Jeff Ward came away with
National MX wins at Broome-Tioga in New York… Ricky Graham won the
Springfield Mile.

A Steve Bruhn photo of James Stewart graced the cover of Cycle News 10
years ago after the young factory Kawasaki team rider won both motos in the
125cc class at the Unadilla National MX. In the 250cc class, Ricky Carmi-
chael won again, prompting people to talk about another undefeated season
for RC… Kenny Coolbeth won the first National Half-Mile ever hosted at the
Mississippi Valley County Fairgrounds… Finland's World Enduro Champion
Juha Salminen made his U.S. GNCC debut at Sunday Creek Raceway in
Ohio. Jason Raines won, Salminen finished third.

Colin Edwards was all smiles and on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago
after winning the AMA Superbike National at Mid-Ohio. We also featured on the
front page the latest production motocross bikes from Honda and Suzuki…
We reported Mike Craig's early departure from the factory Yamaha motocross
team… Mike LaRocco and Ryan Hughes made it a Kawasaki sweep at the
125/250 National Motocross at Unadilla…
After having just returned to racing after a long
hiatus, Ricky Graham took top honors at the
Hagerstown Half Mile.
