the quickest race lap in the first
race) with Beaubier right on his
heels.
Switching up his strategy a bit,
Beaubier chose to let Hayes lead
the bulk of the race. He finally
made his move on lap 13, utilizing
the same draft-pass maneuver
that worked for him in his earlier
triumph.
While the laps were quickly
winding down, the abbreviated
nature of the contest caught
Hayes off guard. He was formu-
lating his plan of attack - and ac-
tually considering striking a bit
earlier this time rather than wait-
ing for a do-or-die last-lap attempt
- when he was shocked to come
around and see the white flag
waiting for him.
"Eventually Cam came by and
when he did I was going about as
fast as I was comfortable going,"
Hayes explained. "If he had more
pace I was going to have to let
him ride away. Fortunately, I had
just enough in the right places to
stay close. I was thinking about
passing him earlier in the race
and just kind of mix up my rhythm
instead of wait for some kind of
desperate move on the last lap.
While I was thinking about these
things, we came up and I saw
the white flag. I was completely
taken by surprise with the white
flag. I hadn't been watching the
