now just four points, 139-134. But what really irked Gagne was not winning. "We're thinking race wins," Gagne said. "I'm not worried about the championship right now. We're just taking it race by race. We just want to win races - that's all. Like I said a fourth is pretty disappointing, but we got the next couple of races and we made it through this weekend and that race… that was a tough one." The battle for fifth was be- tween Yamalube Westby Rac- ing's Dane Westby and Beach's teammate Garrett Gerloff. In the end Westby was able to find a weakness from Gerloff and use it to take that fifth position. Considering Laguna Seca has bit him several times before, Westby was satisfied leaving Monterey with a fifth. The Wol- verine also looked at this as extra motivation and admitted to may- be resting on his laurels a little too much after his doubleheader sweep at Barber. "I feel like I've been kind of slacking," Westby said. "I got in the cloud-nine zone after the two wins and it just shows me that you've got to be on top of your game every time. Those guys aren't going to leave anything on the table." Castrol Triumph's Jason DiSal- vo ran a lonely race in seventh and was happy to see some im- provements after such a difficult season so far. The New Yorker had qualified on pole position. GN Gonzales Racing's Blake Young came out on top in the bat- tle for ninth against GEICO Hon- da's Jake Zemke. Team H35's Benny Solis rounded out the top 10. CN DAYTONA SPORTBIKE FINAL 1. Jake Lewis (Yamaha) 2. JD Beach (Yamaha) 3. Danny Eslick (Triumph) VOL. 51 ISSUE 28 JULY 15, 2014 P99 Briefly... Blake Young and the GN Gonza- les Racing team continue to make strides with the former Superbike racer ending up eight in the Day- tona SportBike final. "The bike was running good today," Young said. "We did some changes in morning warm-up that we ended up sticking with – pretty big gearing changes. I think it took me about two to three laps to get comfortable shifting a mo- torcycle about 10 times more a lap than we were prior. With that said, the guys out front kind of got away. I had a little bit of a battle with Jake [Zemke], but it was more on the pit- board than anything else. He didn't really stick a wheel in too much. I need to get out and get riding more. I feel really, really rusty and I need to learn how to ride a 600 and start over again, I guess. Young is hopeful the team can do some testing at NOLA during the break between Mid-Ohio and New Jersey. "The biggest thing right now is track time and getting me up to speed," he said. "I did a lot of sitting around last year and that's probably the worst thing a rider can do. We need to get back to being rider fit again and I'm pretty happy with how far the team has come since Daytona. It's a brand, brand new team and they're learning large amounts every weekend." Wyman and it served as an extra boost going into a race weekend fresh off of knee sur- gery the Tuesday prior to Laguna Seca. "It's pretty special for me to run his number," Wyman said. "To get on the podium on the Harley and to really put on a good fight. I needed a little extra mo- tivation this week after having surgery on Tuesday before the race. So it was definitely a good way to honor him. I know he would have tried to ride. And he would've ridden as hard as he could and I tried to do that." Kyle Wyman ran his late grandfather's number to pay tribute the owner of Harv's Harley-Davidson – Harv Wyman. 4. Jake Gagne (Yamaha) 5. Dane Westby (Yamaha) 6. Garrett Gerloff (Yamaha) 7. Jason DiSalvo (Triumph) 8. Blake Young (Yamaha) 9. Jake Zemke (Honda) 10. Benny Solis (Yamaha)
