A
couple of decades ago, when the exceptionally gift-
ed Mick Doohan was piling up one all-too predict-
able win after another, there was much talk of how
to spice up the racing. One suggestion, soon shot down
on safety grounds, was to reverse the grid… put the pole
qualifier last. Then at least we'd see some overtaking.
It finally happened at the Sachsenring, by force of cir-
cumstance and a twist of fate. Fickle weather led to a cha-
otic and unprecedented mass pit-lane start, with all but one
rider from the front five rows of the grid in there and push-
ing and shoving like an Italian supermarket queue.
