MOTOGP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 9/JULY 13, 2014
SACHSENRING CIRCUIT/SACHSENRING, GERMANY
P70
It fulfilled predictions on the
matter of safety, with the first cor-
ner fraught with danger as all the
hot shots arrived there together
with carbon brakes too cold to
work properly, though all sur-
vived.
It made for plenty of overtak-
ing.
And, as we all knew way back
then, it led to the same final re-
sult. The same guy won. And the
same top four, in more or less the
expected order.
But it was also great entertain-
ment for a capacity crowd just
short of 90,000, on a week-
end where tens of thousands
of campers had endured heavy
storms, and the event saddened
by a fatal accident to a German
sidecar passenger on Saturday
afternoon.
Maybe the reverse grid wasn't
such a bad idea after all.
The German GP, round nine
of 18, closed off a perfect first
half of the season for dominant
Doohan's latest successor. Marc
Marquez now has nine wins out
of nine races, a royal flush. And
the sort of points lead not seen
at the mid-point since the days of
Mighty Mick.
He broke a 50-year-old Mike
Hailwood record as the young-
est to win nine in a row, and is
nearing Giacomo Agostini's early
1970s records of win-every-race
