40 Years Ago July 23, 1974
The Flying Finn, Heikki Mikkola, was pictured on the cover 40 years ago
to accompany our coverage of the 500cc USGP at Carlsbad. He didn't win
it; instead, it was the Dutchman Gerrit Wolsink who began his string of
victories at the infamous SoCal MX track… Gary Scott won the Castle Rock
Dirt Track National in Washington… We test the latest big-bore motocrosser
from Kawasaki — the KX450 (two-stroke, of
course)… Cycle News also tested the fully
suspended Yamaha Moto-Bike bicycle.
30 Years Ago July 25, 1984
We featured Ricky Graham on the cover 30 years ago to accompany our
interview with the Camel Pro Series points leader… The InSport/Wrangler
Supercross Series headed to Buffalo and we were there to cover Johnny
O'Mara's win over David Bailey, Ron Lechien and Ricky Johnson…
We were also there to cover Bubba Shobert's victory at the Hagerstown
Half Mile… Freddie Spencer won the World Championship Road Race
round in Belgium… Terry Cunningham was the big winner at the Buckeye
National Enduro.

Chris Vermeulen and Ben Bostrom shared the cover 10 years ago for their
wins at Laguna Seca. Vermeulen swept the World Superbike races, while
Bostrom held off Mat Mladin for the AMA Superbike victory. Tommy and
Roger Lee Hayden battled it out in the Superstock class with Tommy getting
the victory. Roger Lee went on to win the Supersport class… We took a tour
of Death Valley on adventure bikes… We tested the latest TE450 off-roader
from Husqvarna… We also sampled Suzuki's latest Boulevard cruisers.

We traveled to Hawaii, more specifically Kauai, to go dual sport riding in
paradise and we told you about our adventures riding on the island… Steve
Morehead took top honors at the I-96 Half Mile in Michigan… Mick Doohan
won the World Road Race round at Mugello… We covered the 125cc Dutch
Motocross Grand Prix where Dave Strijbos came away the victor, as did
Jacky Martens at the 500cc MXGP in
Portugal… Former World MX Champion
Alessandro Puzar announced his retirement.
