Coolbeth lost his series lead to Mees, but essentially the race only served to make the champi- onship battle even more heated. In an epic four-rider battle it's Mees leading the series by a single point over Jake Johnson, JOHNSON'S LAST-LAP PASS Kyle Johnson put together an excit- ing come-from-behind victory on his Parkinson Brothers Honda to edge out Ryan Wells by .244 of a second in the Pro Singles at Hagerstown. The win, Johnson's third in a row, has propelled him to the top spot in the series points chase. "Coming into Hagerstown with back-to-back wins and the points race tightening up brought extra pressure," Johnson said. "I needed to keep the momentum going and claim as many points as possible. After qualifying we were once again in the top spot and backed that up with a heat race win. I got a terrible start in the main and knew I had my work cut out for me. Once I got to third, Wells and Davis had stretched out their lead in front of me, so I had a lot of ground to make up. I was able to make a late race charge to take the win." Wells led every lap of the final on his GE Capital/Motorcycle Superstore KTM except for the last. "I got off to a great start and it was a quiet race for me as I didn't make many mistakes," Wells said. "Then on lap 15 I heard the first noises I heard the whole race, sure enough it was Kyle who was on a mission and got by me on the last lap." 104-103. Coolbeth and Smith are just a hairs-breadth back tied in third with 99 points apiece. Brandon Robinson and Sammy Halbert are also within shooting range of the leaders and there's still a lot of racing to be done. Mees, hot off his victory at Lima a week earlier, was the fast- est rider in qualifying, clocking a 25.087-second lap on his Kenny Tolbert-tuned Rogers Racing/Las Vegas HD/Blue Springs H-D Har- ley-Davidson XR750.
