P132 40 Years Ago July 16, 1974 Motocrosser Nancy Thomas and her glowing smile was featured on the cov- er of Cycle News 40 years ago. She was one of the participants in the Pow- der Puff National Champion at Saddleback that we featured in the issue. The fastest female of the day was another Nancy, Nancy Payne… Jimmy Ellis and Jaroslav Falta took top honors at the 125 National and 250 International MX in Baldwin, Kansas… Gary Scott and Hank Scott made a Scott sandwich out of runner-up Mike Kidd at the San Jose Mile… We covered the Mammoth Motocross. 30 Years Ago July 18, 1984 Freddie Spencer was featured on the cover 30 years ago to accompany the sit down chat Henny Ray Abrams had with the World Road Race Champi- on… The issue also had our coverage of the World Championship 250cc MX Grand Prix from Unadilla. Ron Lechien went 2-1 for the overall victory, top- ping Bob Hannah's 3-2. The top-finishing European was Marc Velkeneers in seventh; Jacky Vimond was eighth… We covered Randy Goss' win at the St. Louis Short Track at Busch Stadium… Eddie Lawson won the World Championship Road Race in Holland. 10 Years Ago July 14, 2004 Rodney Smith in all his glory was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 10 years ago after winning the Wisp GNCC… Ricky Carmichael and Mike Brown claimed the overall wins at RedBud… Jeremy McGrath showed that he wasn't done winning just yet at the Mammoth Motocross, which, at the time, was thought to be the last at Mammoth… Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld combined efforts to win Vegas-to-Reno… Makoto Tamada won the MotoGP in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil after both Sete Gibernau and Valen- tino Rossi crashed out.
