WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 8/JULY 6, 2014
AUTODROMO DO ALGARVE/PORTIMAO, PORTUGAL
P106
gigantic improvement on form -
wet or dry.
"There were many laps to go
so I was waiting [for] the right
point and I was sure that within
one or two laps I could pass Jon-
athan [Rea]," said Melandri. "I
don't know what is possible now
and I will take it race by race be-
cause I cannot change the past. I
just have to look forward."
Guintoli made an apology to
his teammate, but also said he
was put in an unavoidable situa-
tion once what he saw as a gap
opened up.
"The problem was he was on
the racing line and closing in and
I had to go on the bad tarmac,"
Guintoli said. "If you go on the
inside where I was trapped in,
then you cannot go anywhere. It
is a shame because the Aprilias
were so fast. We were flying. I fin-
ished 11 seconds off the win with
a 20-second slower lap in the
middle and a broken footrest."
In the dry Rea had been a fifth-
place rider in race one, starting
from the front row, with Voltcom
Crescent Suzuki's Alex Lowes
well behind him in sixth and Gi-
ugliano very close behind Lowes'
four-cylinder GSX-R.
Eugene Laverty was a disap-
pointed eighth and the top Evo
Leon Haslam (91) ended
up fifth in race two after
holding off Loris Baz
(hidden). Davies (7) rode
through to finish third.
