and we're a little bit behind, but
I'm not really worried about that
right now, I just want to get back
to winning races. We made a
change going into that second
moto, which wasn't better, but we
had to try some stuff."
In the first moto, after Dungey
grabbed the holeshot and led the
opening lap, Canard was able to
pass the KTM rider and take the
lead thanks to a set of jumps he
was doubling that Dungey wasn't.
"The first moto, I got the hole-
shot and Canard was right there
and he went outside and jumped
it," said Dungey. "I really didn't
know anything about it, I should
have been picking up on that, but
I didn't. So about five or six laps
went by and I didn't do it and they
were making time on me, so I de-
cided I had to do it. It was con-
sistently faster, but I don't think it
was meant to be a double when
they built it, but it evolved."
In a roundabout way, Dung-
ey had a bit of good luck come
his way in a situation that could
have ended in a DNF. "I cased
LaRocco's Leap and blew out my
front wheel with two laps to go,"
said Dungey "There were maybe
seven or eight spokes missing.
That could have easily ended my
race, so I feel lucky to be going
home with a third and we'll move
forward from here."
In the second moto, Dungey
ran fourth for much of the race
but jumped up to third when Ca-
nard went down on lap 11.
"In that second moto, once
Trey fell, and Eli got ahead of me,
with Roczen out front, I just ran it
in for third," said Dungey.
Canard Looking Forward
Canard is getting closer to that
first 450 outdoor win. At Red-
Bud, the Team Muscle Milk
Honda rider led a total of nine
laps. And even when he wasn't
leading, there were several laps
where he was breathing down
Roczen's tail pipe. After a stel-
lar runner-up finish in moto one,
a tip-over in moto two cost the
Oklahoman second overall.
"Today was a much better day
than we have had," said Canard.
"Practice was a little tough but I
was happy to get good starts in
both motos today, which really
helped me out during the races.
The first moto was good. I don't
think I was strong enough in the
middle of the race but was able
to kind of pick it back up towards
the end. It was a lot of cat and
mouse out there. The second
moto was about the same ex-
cept while running second I just
washed my front end out and
fell back to fourth. The bike was
working much better; we made a
lot of progress this last week test-
ing so I'm looking forward to the
rest of the season."
Briefly...
I really feel like we've all worked re-
ally hard to get the Yoshimura Su-
zuki RM-Z450 dialed in. In the first
moto, I thought I'd made the pass
and I don't know what happened,
but I got tangled up with another
rider and it just destroyed the bike.
In the second moto, I did the best
I could with the gate pick but we
just had some bad luck in that first
turn. So now we'll just regroup and
focus on putting in a good week of
practice and see if we can come
back strong for Budds Creek next
week."
Cooper Webb won the second
250 moto but a crash in the
first kept him off the podium at
the end of the day.
