WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 8/JULY 6, 2014
AUTODROMO DO ALGARVE/PORTIMAO, PORTUGAL
P108
for 18th and out of the points.
In race two, Lowes was fourth
after Davies had taken full risk for
third on the final lap. And Haslam
held off Baz, with the Kawasaki
rider, like his teammate Sykes,
not on a good wet weather set-
ting, but a useable one his team
found quickly before the start of
the second race.
Guintoli's rapid return to the
track took him seventh, with
Sykes one behind and a disap-
pointed Laverty in ninth and 26
seconds back in the rain. Even
in the wet he thought his bike
worked better on worn tires.
On a day of contrasts the real
winners were Sykes and Rea,
and not just because they were
the actual winners.
Rea gave himself less of a
mountain to climb to get to Sykes
by season end - an apt statement
after their Twitter argument about
Portimao's hills and dips pre-
race. But Sykes still left with the
best advantage in points.
He leads Guintoli 284 points
to 241, Baz is only five behind on
236 and Rea has 235. Six points
now second to fourth, but Me-
landri is a whopping 92 behind
Sykes now. CN
