emale winners are nothing
new in NHRA drag racing.
In fact, it was only a few
weeks ago the sport celebrated
its 100th professional female
winner when Courtney Force
claimed the Funny Car title in To-
peka. However, the NHRA Mello
Yello series had never featured a
husband and wife final until Angie
Smith defeated her husband Matt
to win the Pro Stock Motorcycle
title at New England Dragway. It
was the first win for Angie Smith,
who rides the Kandy Magazine
Buell as part of her husband's
four-bike team.
"This is just so surreal," Smith
said. "Before I even got the bike
stopped I was overwhelmed.
I was crying, happy, scream-
ing. I can't even describe what
this feels like. I've been racing
Pro Stock Motorcycle for seven
years and you just don't know if
you're ever gonna get a chance
to hoist that Wally [NHRA tro-
phy]. Honestly, Matt has won so
many of these. I'm tired of dust-
ing all of them. I just wanted to
have one of my own to dust. I'm
