CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "If you've ever ridden on knobby tires, this movie is for you." Open Face Blues No, the open face three-quarter helmet does not make your face look fat ("Street Cred," Issue 24, June 17), but if you crash that open face helmet will make your face look ugly. Unless you turn your face/head real quick, some day you will wipe your face on the pavement. Ever since I got my first Bell Star in 1969 or '70, I have refused to wear anything but a full cover- age helmet. Wearing a half helmet or a three-quarter helmet is kinda like using a condom with a hole in the end of it. It is just plain stupid. I have had at least three owners of dealerships and at least two parts managers who insisted on wearing an open face helmet, even though I warned them about not protecting their face/nose/ jaw/teeth, etc. Then later when I walked into that dealership and there they were with their faces all bandaged up. Before I said anything, they said, "Yeah, Dr. Bob, you told me so." Have a good day and please keep up the great work. I've been reading Cycle News since 1963 when it was still Motorcycle Journal. Bob "Dr. Bob" Brownell Via the Internet Rossi Style After seeing Valentino Rossi's picture with the Monster ladies surrounding him (Captured, Issue 24, June 17) all I can say is the man has real class with the ladies and talent on a motorcycle. And I thought he might win the last one but Marc Marquez is truly talented as well. Kirk Ochwat Via the Internet Life Under A Rock? Just realized Cycle News is back. Not sure how long I've been in the dark, but very glad to see an elec- tronic Cycle News. Just signed up for the regular e-mail blast. Hope this is a good thing and proves good for all Cycle News staff and associates. I grew up reading Cycle News and felt lost without your professional report- ing. Great to see you back! Monty Brown Danville, CA Mosport Archives Thank you, Larry Lawrence, for bringing back memories of World Superbike (and that 1967 Grand Prix) at Mosport (Archives, Issue 21, May 28). It is one of the great tracks of North America, a throw- back now to when riders rode to their limits with whatever their guts and skills defined, in relation to the track they were on. It's much the same today at the Isle of Man, isn't it? Those who race in the Cana- dian series race at Mosport still know and I'm sure they all relish the challenge of one of the few 'real' racetracks left. Barry Glading Via the Internet The Penton Movie Last night was the world premier for the new move, "PENTON: The John Penton Story" at the Ohio Theatre in the prestigious Play- house Square district in Cleveland, Ohio. Almost a thousand fans were in attendance, along with most of the Penton family and the man himself, John Penton. "Family" not only includes the Pentons, but many of the extended family of Penton riders and associates from years gone by. Also spotted were Ed Youngblood, author of the book of the same name upon which the movie is based, and Dave Despain. The movie, at two hours and 14 minutes long, is a generous look not only at this special off-road motorcycle pioneer, his sons and family, but also of the Penton and KTM motorcycle companies. If you've ever ridden on knobby tires, this movie is for you. But you can bring anyone along and they will enjoy it. The film is moved along nicely by commentary from the Pentons themselves, industry fig- ures, and famous riders from past eras, diverse as Dick Mann and Bob Hannah. Lyle Lovett, a Penton enthusiast since age 14, serves as narrator to fill in the gaps and add general appeal by providing some of the music. Opening on the 20th, it's equal parts documentary and story, blending elements of "On Any Sun- day," "Why We Ride" and "World's Fastest Indian." But with limited general appeal, you may have to look for it. The trailer is online and so are details about arranging special showings. We're going to go see it again.
