rain-marred race at Road Amer-
ica. Anthony felt this one might
also be marked with an asterisk
since so many of the leading rid-
ers were sidelined, but as Hayes
commented afterwards," finish-
ing a grueling race like this is part
of the deal, and both of these
guys found a way to finish when
a lot of others didn't."
Anthony now has two-career
AMA Superbike podiums, and re-
markably is second in the stand-
ings, but the 32-year-old Aus-
tralian hasn't yet seemed overly
excited about the accomplish-
ment. He was rather subdued in
Saturday's post-race press con-
ference and just calmly explained
how he did it.
"It was all about trying to keep
it on two wheels, it was pretty
slippery out there," Anthony said.
"That was my goal, to just bring it
to the end. I knew some people
would go down and a few of them
did. So it was just bring it home in
one piece."
On the other hand, the 23-year-
old Clark was clearly elated by
his first podium in his fifth season
of AMA Superbike racing.
"This is great," Clark said. "To
earn my first podium in the Super-
bike class, out of all of them this
is definitely something special. It
was definitely a race of attrition out
there. If everyone wouldn't have
stayed up I probably would be up
Briefly...
Roger Hayden was trying to keep
Josh Hayes in range in Saturday's
Superbike race, but suffered a crash
with about three laps to go. "I came
down that hill and kind of shut off a lit-
tle more jerky than normal," Hayden
explained. "It kind of put a little more
weight on the front, so I made a mis-
take. I wasn't over my head, but I
was definitely pushing pretty hard to
stay with Josh [Hayes]. The race was
coming down and I wanted to stay
close enough to take a shot at him."
Dane Westby's sweep of the Day-
tona SportBike race at Barber now
gives him four-career wins in the
class. That moves him into a three-
way tie for fifth on the all-time DSB
wins list with Jason DiSalvo and Jake
Gagne, who each have four DSB
wins as well.
Jake Lewis broke through to score
his first career pole in Daytona Sport-
Bike Saturday at Barber Motorsports
Park. Lewis ran his MotoSport.
com/Meen Yamaha R6 to a time of
1:27.579 to top the charts in the final
DSB qualifying session. That didn't
quite match the DSB track record
of 1:27.219 set by Cameron Beau-
bier last year, but Lewis was thrilled
with his progress in the class. "I've
been working really hard these last
three weeks," said a grinning Lew-
is. "It was disappointing coming off
Road America so I came into here
working really hard and with a lot of
confidence. I really want to get that
first win, but to get the pole position
means a lot to me."
