We featured a wrap-around cover photo of a highly modified Honda 500-Four
road racer built by Racecrafters International in Hollywood, California…
The big story inside the issue, however, was our coverage of the Superbowl
of Motocross at the L.A. Coliseum. CZ-mounted Jaroslav Falta went 1-1-2
(Roger DeCoster won the third of three 25-minute motos) for the overall vic-
tory. Rex Staten won the Support race and
Marty Smith won the High School competi-
tion… Billy Uhl won the Bad Rock ISDE
Qualifier in Wellston, Oregon.

Our Independence Day issue featured a Honda XR200 getting wet on the
cover to accompany our test of the fun-loving little off-roader… Our featured
race coverage was the 500cc World Motocross Championship at Carlsbad.
Honda's Johnny O'Mara won the first moto after David Bailey's rear wheel
came apart while leading. A 4-1 gave Yamaha's Broc Glover the overall win
ahead of teammate Rick Johnson (3-2). Ron Lechien won the 250 Support
race… Fred Merkel won the Pocono AMA Superbike… Dave Roper won
the Isle of Man.

Twenty-four-year-old Ricky Carmichael was pictured on the cover 10 years
ago for reaching 100 AMA National MX victories at Budds Creek; James
Stewart won the 125cc class… Bobby Bonds captured the overall victory at
the WORCS round in Longview, Washington… Jason Raines reigned at the
Patriot GNCC in Virginia… Suzuki introduced its first 450cc four-stroke RM-Z
motocrosser… We covered the Perry Mountain 24-Hour Challenge won by
the Hattiesburg Cycles/Team A squad of Landon Carter, Glen Myatt, Ste-
phen Reed, Frank Davis, Taylor Reynolds and Eric Elam.

Just like the cover line says, we featured the men and the machines of the
Grand National Championship Series on the front page of our special issue
on dirt track racing… We covered the Dallas Half Mile that was won by Steve
Morehead… Troy Corser won the AMA Superbike in New Hampshire…
Randy Hawkins got back on track by winning the Little Raccoon Classic
National Enduro in Ohio… Kawasaki-mounted Stefan Everts swept the MX GP
at Lommel; Suzuki's Greg Albertyn ran out of
gas on the last lap of both motos.
