LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 3/JUNE 7, 2014
THUNDER VALLEY RACEWAY/LAKEWOOD, COLORADO
P76
overall, a vast improvement over
rounds one and two.
"I think this year we were actu-
ally a contender in Supercross,
at one point we had a chance
to be on top, after we knocked
off three wins in a row," added
Stewart. "But at the same time,
you are trying to decide if you
want to spend the time prepar-
ing for outdoors or trying to deal
with Supercross. We jumped on
outdoors, but maybe not as hard
as if we were out of the running
in Supercross. I was off the bike
with a few injuries, so I just think
we came into outdoors not as
prepared as we wanted. You al-
most have to decide what series
you want to concentrate on, but I
think at this point we are on track
and will only get better."
Dungey's Early Pressure
Ryan Dungey was all over Stew-
art early in moto one, and at one
point he even passed the Suzuki
rider, but Stewart was able to
retake the lead a short distance
later. For the first several laps it
looked as though it was a fore-
gone conclusion that Dungey
would eventually pass Stewart for
the lead, however, it never hap-
pened.
Stewart admitted after the race
that Dungey had him covered in a
couple of sections on the track,
but the KTM rider could never
capitalize.
"I should have been able to
make the pass in that first moto,"
said Dungey. "That's what we're
trained to do and that's what we
need to do. I really did try hard
and I gave it my best. I did change
lines and I came close to making
the pass, but James edged me
out."
While pressing Stewart, Dung-
ey made a mistake midway into
the race, which allowed Roczen
to pass him and move into sec-
ond. Another mistake on lap 13
allowed Canard to move around
Dungey and into third.
"It's early in the season, but
you never want to let the competi-
tion get too far out ahead of you,"
said Dungey. "It was just a mat-
ter of a few mistakes in the first
moto, but in the second it was a
clean fight to the end and he got
the win, but we're not far off."
After Glen Helen, Dungey
looked prepared to add another
title to his credentials, however,
three races in, some are question-
