IN THE WIND P36 AMA PRO SAYS ALL GOOD A MA Pro Racing issued a press release last week, defending its actions from the second AMA Superbike race at Road America on June 1 – a race that was declared wet, but start- ed in dry conditions, then not red flagged when it started pouring. Here is the AMA's statement on the event: "In light of the recent event at Road America where some of our officiating procedures were called into question, AMA Pro Racing would like to reiterate to our competitors, our partners, our tracks and all of our stake- holders that safety always has been paramount to our busi- ness model. Suggestions to the contrary are reckless and misin- formed, ignoring the long-stand- ing history of AMA Pro Racing and the integrity of the individuals involved in the Daytona Motors- ports Group. "Faced with inclement weath- er at Road America, we followed our rulebook to the letter, in the interest of rider safety and fair competition. We know we made the right, rules-based decisions in running an event that was challenging for everyone at the racetrack that day. "Moving forward, we will con- tinue to operate our races with safety at the forefront within our established competition rules and, as always, we will continue to review our ongoing procedures with our riders and teams." NELSON RIDE TO WORK DAY T he AMA is encouraging all motorcyclists to participate in the 23rd Annual International Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day on June 16 to demon- strate that motorcycles are fun and affordable, easy to maneuver in traffic and park, fuel efficient and better for the environment than cars and trucks, according to the AMA. "Motorcyclists understand the practical benefits of riding, in ad- dition to the sheer joy of it," said Rob Dingman, AMA president and CEO. "Ride To Work Day provides motorcycle enthusiasts an opportunity to share their love of riding with co-workers and others they meet during the course of the day. And of course, riding a motorcycle is a socially conscious activity." With an estimated participa- tion of more than 1 million riders in 2013, the event draws the at- tention of government officials, employers, media outlets and other daily commuters. Motorcyclists can also use the opportunity to highlight important issues, such as distracted drivers, motorcycle-only checkpoints, health-insurance discrimination, parking restrictions and the ben- efits of legal lane splitting. continued on page 38
