P138 40 Years Ago June 18, 1974 Our topic on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago focused on local racing all around the country, but our feature race story was Corky Keener's win at the Louisville Half Mile… We tested the Yamaha 175 MX… Brad Lackey came close of winning his first overall victory in an international motocross race when he went 1-2-2 at a French International. Arne Kring edged him out with a 3-1-1 score… Torlief Hansen won the 250 MX GP in England, while Jim Pomeroy DNF'd both motos. 30 Years Ago June 20, 1984 At the time, the Yamaha RZ350, which was pictured on the cover, was the hot bike and even hotter were the aftermarket exhaust pipes for it. We took the little RZ to the strip and found out which pipe made it go faster… We covered the Road American GNC/Camel Pro Series Road Race that was won by Mike Baldwin… Terry Poovey won the GNC Dirt Track in Delaware… We toured the Spandau factory in West Berlin where the BMW K100 was built… Dan Smith and Dan Ashcraft won the Baja-to- Barstow desert race. 10 Years Ago June 16, 2004 Road racing made front-page news 10 years ago, with Miguel Duhamel win- ning both AMA Superbike races as well as Formula Xtreme at Road America; Valentino Rossi won a wet one in Italy… Geoff Aaron swept the AMA/NATC Trials in Colorado… Shane Watts won the Funky Chicken Hare Scrambles in Oregon… Stefan Everts won both MX1 motos at the Grand Prix of France at St. Jean d'Angely… MX star Rich Thordwaldson was seriously injured in a road race accident at Infineon. He passed away three weeks later.
