AMA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
VOL. 51 ISSUE 22 JUNE 3, 2014 P43
flag, it kind of set on me: 'My god,
they're really going to make me
ride this thing around another lap.
Are they not watching this? Are
they not seeing what's happening
right now?' "
He continued, "If you care
about your show, if you care
about your athletes, how do you
make this decision? We've all got
to work together, we all want to be
here; we all want to be healthy. To
see Cam [Beaubier] fall down for
no good reason… to see Jason
Farrell down on the back straight-
away for no good reason. And it
sounds like Chris Fillmore, too. I
don't know how many people fell.
It took me so long to get around
the racetrack, they could have
picked it up and gone home by
the time I got back around."
Third-place finisher Hayden
was of a similar mindset despite
the good the result did for his title
campaign.
"Actually, I don't really deserve
third place," he said. "I got lucky
with Cameron crashing - those
guys were faster than me. But I'm
just glad to finish the race on two
wheels. It was pretty sketchy. I
don't know who was making the
calls there at the end, but they
definitely didn't have rider safety
first. They want to fly us all over
the country and look at tracks
for track safety, but they want to
make us run in a downpour on
slicks. I'm pretty disappointed
about that, but we'll take the
points and go onto Barber."
Even privateer Anthony strug-
gled to celebrate his break-
through runner-up result.
"Yeah, this is still a second
place, but it's a bit hard to take it
when, I don't think any of us feel
we shouldn't be sitting here right
now," Anthony said. "We should
have been back in the pits long
before this. I'm going to be pretty
vocal about it and say, 'yeah, bad
decision by AMA.' They really
need to pick up their game in rid-
er safety. But, hey, I'm up here.
It's definitely my first podium so
I'm happy with that. It's great."
Despite the controversial man-
ner in which it got to this point,
the AMA Superbike title fight has
been effectively reset at the top.
As the championship prepares
to head to Barber Motorsports
Park later this month, Beaubier,
Hayden, and Hayes are sepa-
rated by less than the points dif-
ference of a race win versus a
second-place result. CN
