40 Years Ago June 4, 1974
One of the stars of the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago was the Harley-Da-
vidson SX 175 dual sport bike that we tested in the issue. We also featured the
"crash city" Colorado Half Mile, won by Mert Lawwill, and the Greenhorn En-
duro in California… We covered the fourth running of the Virginia City Grand Prix
where Carl Cranke came away with the overall victory… Brad Lackey finished
third in Belgium, while an ill Jim Pomeroy
didn't start in Yugoslavia.
30 Years Ago June 6, 1984
A giant-sized photo of Kevin Hines in action at the Fools Gold National Enduro
in California was featured on the cover 30 years ago. It was a Husky sweep
with Hines winning ahead of Mike Melton, Dave Bertram, Terry Cunning-
ham and Fritz Kadlec… Rick Johnson and Jeff Ward were the big winners
at the High Point National Motocross, with Johnson topping the 250 class
and Ward the 125 class… Eddie Lawson outdueled Freddie Spencer at the
Austrian Grand Prix… Tony Pasqualotto won the 14
th
Virginia City GP.

Eric Bostrom was pictured on the cover 10 years ago for winning the Pikes
Peak AMA Superbike over Jake Zemke and Aaron Yates. It was his fifth win
at the facility… Chris Carr won the AMA Flat Track at Florence Speedway in
Kentucky… Jason Raines led Barry Hawk and Rodney Smith across the fin-
ish line at the Rausch Creek GNCC in Pennsylvania… Destry Abbott claimed
the AMA National Hare & Hound victory over David and Russ Pearson in
Ocotillo, California… We interviewed "Frankie" — Pier-Francesco Chili.

We featured the Laguna Seca AMA Superbike on the cover 20 years ago, as
well as the Trask Mountain Two-Day Qualifier. Pascal Picotte and Rodney Smith
were the race winners…. Mike LaRocco claimed the 250 National MX win at Budd
Creek, Steve Lamson won the 125 class… Four-strokes took center stage with
Husqvarna's Jacky Martens winning the 500cc British Grand Prix and Joel Smets
finishing second on a Vertemati… We featured an interview with factory Yamaha MX
mechanic Brian Lunniss who had been paired
with Damon Bradshaw and Michael Craig.
