MOTOCROSS
LUCAS OIL PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 1/MAY 24, 2014
GLEN HELEN RACEWAY/SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA
P40
Grant got the outdoor season
started with a victory in the first
450 moto.
It was also a great day for the
state of Minnesota which saw
two of its own standing on the top
step of the podium at the end of
the day.
450 NATIONAL
KTM VERSUS KTM
The race for the 450-class overall
win came down to two riders: Red
Bull KTM teammates Ken Roc-
zen and Ryan Dungey. The two
KTM 450 SX-F pilots finished 2-3
to first-moto winner Josh Grant,
but when Grant crashed early in
the second moto, knocking him
out of the overall hunt, it became
a winner-takes-all showdown be-
tween the two-time 450 outdoor
champ, Dungey, and the 2011
MX2 World Champion, Roczen,
in the second moto to decide the
overall Glen Helen winner.
Roczen had the early advan-
tage. He shot into the lead right
off the start, as did Dungey in
second. Roczen set the pace
and opened up a small cush-
ion over his teammate but could
never really put a gap on him,
though they both opened up a
gap on third-place rider Trey Ca-
nard on the Honda Muscle Mile
CRF450R.
It wasn't until the late stages of
the race that Dungey started mak-
ing some headway on Roczen
and with just a few laps left Dung-
ey started turning up the heat on
Roczen. At one point, however, it
looked as though Dungey would
lose all his momentum when he
got held up by two lapped riders,
but he somehow managed to pull
Roczen back in.
On the final lap, Dungey was all
over Roczen and with the finish
line literally in their sights, Dung-
ey out-braked Roczen heading
into a left-hand turn just before a
large, single jump. Dungey stuck
his front wheel in on the young
German rider, pushed him out
wide up the face of the jump and
launched himself into the lead.
Roczen tried getting him back in
the last two turns right before the
checkers but came up 1.4-sec-
onds short. Dungey took the
moto win and overall victory, his
3-1 (45 points) nipping Roczen's
2-3 (44 points).
"I felt like we really had to win
Jeremy Martin grabbed three, yes three,
holeshots in the 250cc class.
