f ever there was a Mile specialist in the
AMA Grand National Championship it
would have to Bryan Smith. Nine of Smith's
12 Grand National wins have come on miles
and one of the tracks Smith seems to particu-
larly like is the Springfield Mile. Following the
long two-month-plus break after Daytona, the
Grand National Series is getting back under-
way at Springfield this Sunday (May 25) and
Smith is expected to be one of the favorites.
Smith is on a new Kawasaki this season,
but the speed advantage he had over the
Harley-Davidson XR750 riders last year may
evaporate since AMA Pro Racing dropped the
Bryan Smith (42) has a new Kawasaki this
season, but he said much of the bike is the
same componentry of last's year's so he
feels he still has a good shot at winning
Springfield this Sunday. All the other riders
Smith thinks will be running for the win are

last year's double Springfield Mile winner
Brandon Robinson (44), Brad Baker (12)
and Kenny Coolbeth (2).
