We featured our test on the new Honda XL250 that sold for $1056 and the
San Jose Mile on the cover 40 years ago. We thought highly of the fun-loving
XL, and King Kenny won the Mile… Bill Saltzman won the Desert Racing
Association's Silver Cup at California City… We covered the 250cc MX GP in
Poland won by Gunnady Moisseiev; Jim Pomeroy struggled with suspen-
sion troubles… In France, Heikki Mikkola
and Roger DeCoster battled to the bitter
end with Mikkola prevailing this time.

A photo of Bubba Shobert in action filled the front page 30 years ago to
accompany our in-depth story on the factory Honda RS750D dirt tracker…
Ricky Johnson made headline news for winning the Orlando Super-
cross… We showed the first photo of the ATK 560, designed and built by
Horst Leitner and Dallas Baker; the bike's first customer, Jesse Gold-
berg, was pictured with the machine… Fred Merkel was the master of the
Sears Point Superbike… Dan Ashcraft won the National Hare Scrambles
(yes, Hare Scrambles) at Lucerne.

DuHamel for winning at Barber, Stefan Everts for winning the Grand Prix of
Benelux, Sete Gibernau for winning LaMans, and Regis Laconi for winning
at Monza… Russ and David Pearson made it a family affair at the Jericho
National Hare & Hound… Jeff Ward won the Supermoto Challenge at Infi-
neon… Jimmy Wood topped the West Coast Flat Track at Tulare.

mona Half Mile…Mick Doohan edged out Kevin Schwantz at the Spanish
Grand Prix… Scott Russell was the top man at the German World Super-
bike… We covered the 500cc Motocross Grand Prix in Ireland, which was
won by Honda's Marcus Hansson…
In France, Greg Albertyn won the 250cc GP over Donny Schmit… Scott
Summers won the Battle of Antietam
GNCC… We covered the Scottish 6-Days
Trials that was won by Doug Lampkin.
