that's basically how we did it."
When Ulrich say's "we," he's
not referring to a large staff. As
are most Ulrich ventures, it was a
family effort.
"It was basically me, Chris
and his sister, Natalie," Ulrich
said. "We put this thing together.
There were a lot of pieces and it
was complicated. It seemed like
every time I turned around there
was some new thing that had to
get handled. But somebody had
to do it and I knew nobody else
was going to try it."
It wasn't the first time since
the Daytona Motorsports
Group (DMG) bought AMA
Pro Racing that the idea
of an additional national
road racing series was
thought up. In fact in 2008
the MIC looked into it right
after Roger Edmondson
proceeded to alienate ev-
eryone in the community
– OEM's and fans alike.
But Ulrich was the first to
actually do it. And he had
a plan to augment the AMA
Pro Road Racing series to
benefit the teams and the
sport.
"I was looking for events
that were within a specific
time span – the 11 weeks
between Daytona and
Road America," Ulrich
said. "And I was looking for
events that were in a geo-
graphic area, that at the
time we started this there
was no AMA pro race west
of the Mississippi. So
we were looking to solve
those two problems.
"The WERA Fontana
race was a pretty obvious
one and so was this race
here at Sonoma with AFM. I start-
ed calling people up and going,
'Hey, I got this idea what do you
think?' And the reaction I got was
really enthusiastic, like 'yeah we
got to save our sport. Lets do it.
Yeah we want to do it.' All three
