Briefly...
the most he would make all night.
Many races were decided on the
last lap over the course of the night,
more specifically in the last turn – the
Rock Turn – that gave everyone fits
all night. Destry Abbott had a sure
win taken away because of the turn
(but he had some help with lapped
riders being in his way), and so did
Wally Palmer, who was leading an
LCQ when he got hung up in the
rocks. But the turn was cruelest to
Shelby Turner. Turner was riding
smoothly and was headed for a sure
win in the Women's Expert final when
the rocks grabbed her bike's front
wheel and wouldn't let it go, at least
until eventual winner Kacy Martinez
rode past. She eventually pulled her
bike free and took second ahead of
Morgan Tanke.
Speaking of Kacy Martinez, the
KTM rider who is currently leading
the Women's class in the GNCC
Championship, was thrilled to be on
the podium at Las Vegas. "This is
my first EnduroCross main event win
after trying for so many years" Mar-
tinez said. "I have been racing the
GNCC's and the first two were mud
races so that really helped me in the
slick track."
As usual, there was a host of support
classes for amateur, veteran and tri-
als competitors at the Vegas race.
The Vet-class win went to defending
champion Kurt Nicoll, second was
Josh Adams and third was Colby
Begin. The Trialscross win went to
Australian Jack Field (2013's cham-
pion) who pulled another finish-line
backflip after his win. Second place
race, worried about myself and
had put the hammer down," he
said. "It was a relief to see the
white flag. I had a big gap and I
slacked off that last lap. I didn't
even want to jump the finish line
jump. It was an amazing night. I
definitely made a statement to-
night, for sure. It's a great way to
start off the season."
While the race for the win
might have been a rare runaway
by EnduroCross standards,
the race for second place (and
pretty much every position from
there on back) was intense.
Blazusiak put himself in con-
tention for the win early in the
race. He wasn't far behind Webb
when he lost traction at just the
wrong moment – while trying to
wheelie up a large log. He didn't
make it and rolled backwards
and had to try it again. He fi-
nally got over it on the second
attempt, but that was enough to
let Haaker catch and pass him
for the position. Another stumble
in the most difficult section of
the track, a wide 180-turn filled
with large and openly spaced
boulders, simply referred to as
