Teammate Rossi was sec- ond at the end of the first lap, Dovizioso next time round, and thereafter Pramac Ducati's An- drea Iannone, the last-named again putting in a very strong early run. Marquez emerged to take the place on lap four, Lorenzo now a second ahead; and over the next couple of laps the Honda closed relentlessly on the Ya- maha. Marquez had found the first laps "really enjoyable, with a lot of riders and a lot of passing, though there is quite a big risk in that situation." Once free he had settled for a calmer approach, content to follow Lorenzo close- ly and clearly confident that he could pass him as and when he chose. The others had been piling up on each other behind the hard- to-pass Iannone. Pedrosa was seventh after three laps, but he was picking his way forward, and promoted (Above) Rossi got pushed off-line on more than one occasion, but bounced back to finish an eventual fourth. (Right) Pol Espargaro (44) leads his teammate Bradley Smith (38) in their early battle for seventh. The spot went to Smith.
