AMSOIL AMA GRAND NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY SERIES, PRESENTED BY MAXXIS
VOL. 51 ISSUE 17 APRIL 29, 2014 P95
rode a steady and consistent
race where he maintained a com-
fortable gap over DuVall all the
way to the finish.
"The track was pretty rough,
there were a lot of soft roots and
it was pretty deep so you had to
be smart in feeling the track out,"
Mullins said. "After Kailub went
down I knew all I had to do was
ride steady and that's what I did."
While Mullins was focused on
the checkered flag, Russell was
on a mission to salvage valuable
championship points. In just two
laps Russell was able to make up
the reported three-minute defi-
cit en route to the second place
rider of DuVall. On the final lap,
Russell caught DuVall and heav-
ily pressured the West Virginia
rider all the way to the checkers,
finishing only 00.375 behind for
third overall. Russell laid it all on
the line during the final lap, run-
ning the fastest lap time of the
entire race, which was nearly
one minute faster than DuVall's
last lap.
Russell later stated on social
media, "Two years ago I would
have quit on myself, but today I
rode how a champion should.
