OFF ROAD AMSOIL AMA GRAND NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY SERIES, PRESENTED BY MAXXIS ROUND 5/APRIL 27, 2014 SPRINGVILLE, INDIANA P94 the weekend, Mullins trailed Russell's lead by only two points in the champion- ship standings but there was no denying the momentum behind Russell's three- race winning streak up to that point. The hype surrounding these two title con- tenders has been larger than life, and the racing action has yet to disappoint. Russell set a good pace in the early portion of the three-hour race but Mul- lins was bound and determined to keep the defending champ within striking dis- tance. In fact, Mullins was close enough to witness the leader go end-over-end on a straightway section just before the pit area. After what could have been considered a race-ending crash, Rus- sell got up and rounded the corner to his pit area where the FMF/KTM crew took the time to replace his exhaust and at- tempt to straighten out parts on his bike. As a result of his prolonged pit stop on the fourth lap, Russell lost nearly three minutes on the lead pack. "I don't even know what happened really, I grabbed the front brake and my front end just went sideways. I was wide open out of the straightaway and I went flipping several times," Russell said. With Russell down, Mullins took over the lead position and RideMPS.com/ AMSOIL/Honda's Thad DuVall moved into second place. From there, Mullins (Above) Charlie Mullins captured his second win of the season. (Right) Thad DuVall hung on at the end to finish second overall.
