SUPERBIKE SHOOTOUT SUPERBIKE SHOOTOUT SERIES ROUND 1/APRIL 27, 2014 AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY/FONTANA, CALIFORNIA P114 you got the person in front of you and you know you can just brake when he brakes. I don't know what it is. But it don't seem like anybody could get away and ev- erybody was really close to each other. But that had to be a good race. Too bad nobody could see it [live] because there was a lot of passing going on. It was a good race." For a lot of the youngsters, the four-year absence meant that they either had little to no experi- ence at Fontana. Beaubier raced a 125 there; Gerloff had never rid- den there; and Beach's last time on track was seven years ago at a club race. But Hayes has. "Pretty typical. I didn't win," Hayes said about his return to the track. "Like I said, I was riding a good race. I was having a lot of fun... I knew they were there. I was really confused, because I could not find my pit board. I could see Cameron's [Beaubier] and I could see a bunch of other ones. I kept seeing Cameron P2 plus zero and then Martin [Carde- nas] would pass me. And I'm like, 'I don't get it. How does that add up?' I don't know what was going on behind me. I was a little con- fused myself." "I'm not sure," Cardenas said about where this race ranked in the memory books. "I'm not sure where to compare it. But it's my second Superbike win, I think, so pretty high. Because Superbike has been difficult." The track seems to be a love- hate relationship. But for Anthony he's quite fond of it. "I've always liked this place," Anthony said. "A lot of people don't. But I think it's good. It's a good fun track. It's different. It's got a lot of things in it. Lots of va- riety not just the same old track we race at." >>RETURNING TO SUPERBIKES' ROOTS The Superbike Shootout's two classes – Pro Superbike and Pro Superbike – were nestled inside a Fasttrack track day on Saturday and the WERA event on Sunday. So while some purists might balk at a professional race weekend in the middle of amateur racing – it was a rather pure scene. A return to racing's roots, so to speak. As such, the event had a more re- laxed feel and the professionals were digging the vibe and the fan turnout. "I think that the Superbike Shootout has had a great vibe to it over the weekend," said Hayes. "I think that it's been pleasantly unexpected just the sheer num- ber of people that came out this weekend to watch us race here at Auto Club Speedway. I couldn't believe when we were up there at the podium how many people were crowded around the podi- um. And that rivals AMA Nation- als, the number of people that we've seen around the podium if not better. It's been a fantastic vibe. I think all of us have been walking around smiling having a good time and we're all happy to
