race and so far that has been
the key to success amongst the
countless variables in off-road
racing.
Despite the first-turn setback,
Russell quickly fought his way to
the front and began challenging
Mullins for the lead by lap two.
"I knew Charlie was in the lead
and I was about 30 seconds
down on the first lap. I knew if I
could catch him and demoral-
ize him a bit I could get into the
lead," Russell said.
And Russell did just that, pass-
ing Mullins through a tight pine tree
section that was constructed spe-
cifically for the afternoon pro race.
Mullins fought hard to stay within
striking distance of Russell but a
couple of small mistakes near the
end cost him valuable time.
Briefly...
RideMPS.com/AMSOIL/Honda's
Thad DuVall made a midrace pit
stop to swap out his rear shock in
hopes to soften the blows a little bit
more. However, DuVall's decision to
pit cost him valuable championship
points.
JCR Honda's Chris Bach also expe-
rienced difficulty in adapting to the
rough conditions. After experienc-
ing a few crashes, Bach stopped
into the pits where his crew made a
few suspension adjustments and he
finished the race without scoring any
championship points.
Factory Husqvarna's Mike Brown
made a guest appearance at the
GNCC and was expected to be a
top contender. However, Brownie
reportedly battled with suspension
issues that kept him to a slower pace
than usual, finishing 11th in XC1.
