R
ed Bull KTM's new recruit
Sam Sunderland is making
the most of his opportunity, the
Brit taking the overall lead in the
Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge af-
ter finishing second to his team-
mate Marc Coma in the second
stage on Monday, April 7.
Coma topped Sunderland by
two minutes in stage two, but
it's Sunderland at the top of the
overall standings – by a minute
and 25 seconds over his team-
mate. The factory Honda of Pau-
lo Goncalves is third overall after
finishing third in Monday's stage,
the Portuguese rider some four
minutes and 16 seconds behind
the leading KTM.
Goncalves' teammate Joan
Barreda is currently fourth over-
all with Jordi Viladoms fifth on the
third factory Red Bull KTM.
The first stage of the event on
Sunday, April 6 was marred by
the death of British rider Cam-
eron Waugh, who was found
injured at the 155 km mark by
KTM's support rider Jakub Przy-
gonski. Przygonski raised the
alarm and performed CPR for 20
minutes on Waugh and the Brit
was airlifted to hospital some
13 minutes later. He was pro-
nounced dead on arrival, how-
ever.
The first stage was won by
Sunderland.
