Car racer and innovator Roy Richter cre- ated Bell Helmets after he lost a second close friend in a racing accident. Richter made a commitment to building safety products and it was out of the garage behind Bell Auto Parts in 1954 that Bell began manu- facturing its first helmet – the '500.' Bell is credited as having the first full-face helmet - the Bell Star – that went into production in 1963 sold as the "ultimate helmet" for track cars, dragster, flat track motorcycles and racing boats.
