Just as planned, Stewart got
away in fourth place during the
main event, but by lap three he
was in second behind Villopoto.
Stewart slowly reeled in Villo-
poto and on lap 10, he surprised
the defending champ by taking
an inside line heading into the
turn before the whoops. And
though the two riders didn't make
contact, the move appeared to
startle Villopoto because he lost
control for a moment and threw
out his leg to save his balance.
Before Villopoto could coun-
ter, Stewart was by him and into
the lead, a lead he would main-
tain to the finish.
"I had a few places where I was
faster, but it wasn't so much where
you were faster, but where could
you find the room to pass on this
track," said Stewart. "I was pretty
quick through the rhythm section
before the whoops so I knew that
would be a good spot to pass,
right before the whoops. So in
the main, he was going outside
in the whoop section, so I could
tell in the rhythm section before
the whoops he kind of went over
just a little bit so I just went to the
inside on him in that turn.
"We didn't touch, I think it just
kind of surprised him and he got
cross-rutted a little bit, after that,
I was able to hold the pass in the
whoops section."
Villopoto kept Stewart in his
sights and it didn't look like he
gave up hope of regaining the
