where I was going, but it made
me feel as if I belonged on the lit-
tle bike, not merely an oversized,
overweight ornament.
As the laps counted down,
this gradually translated into en-
hanced faith in my number-one
friend when riding a low-powered
lightweight like this, namely the
front Dunlop control tire, coupled
with good feedback from the
WP forks and the KTM's excel-
lent mid-turn stability. Lap by lap
I gradually upped my momentum
in turns – but then I got to the
stage where I had to start work-
ing on my braking points.
This is very much an acquired
skill on a bike like this, where
brake, turn, point and squirt is def-
initely not an option, and corner-
ing speed is all important. The pair
of tiny 218mm front discs and their
minuscule Brembo radial calipers
didn't seem to stop the KTM works
bike any better than the single
290mm front disc on Czech rider
Karel Hanika's title-winning Red
Bull Rookies bike I also rode. But
their reduced gyroscopic mass
