stripe. I felt like maybe I could get
by Hayes, but I don't know what
he [Beaubier] weighs because
[Josh] Herrin's bike was always
faster [in previous years]. I knew
it was me and him [Beaubier]. I
knew Martin [Cardenas] wasn't
going to get me at the stripe be-
cause he struggles with some-
thing getting out of the chicane.
It was my only chance. I tried to
open up a gap, but it wasn't big
enough. By the looks of it, the
way he came past me, I needed
a lot more of a gap."
Don't Go Down There
Somewhere in Hayden's memory
banks he recalled someone mak-
ing a pass way down low on the
tri-oval. At the end of the 12
th
lap,
he went down there to check it
out. Turns out he won't do that
again. Hayden hit the yellow
paint on the apron and found out
that tight wasn't tyle.
"I had a good run that time,"
Hayden said. "I just wanted to
see what it was like, and I defi-
nitely will not do that again. I had
both feet off [the pegs] and it was
a little sketch. [Jamie] Hacking
made a pass there one time in a
Superstock race. I don't know if
it is slicker now, but as soon as I
hit that paint leaned over the bike
swapped both ends."
Boom!
Last year, Hayes failed to finish
both races at Daytona because
of mechanical problems. After
winning on Friday, the curse was
broken. Well… maybe not. On
Briefly...
he was learning is that you can't go
as fast on cold tires on the big bike
like you can on the R6. "On the 600
when you put new tires on you can
just go, carry a bunch of roll speed
and get off the corners good," Beau-
bier said after earning provisional
pole position on Thursday. "But on
the Superbike it's different. Once it
slides a little bit, it starts bucking you
so it's definitely just things I'm learn-
ing every time I get on the bike."
Larry Pegram had a miserable Day-
tona, his EBR so far down on power
from the rest of the Superbike field
that he couldn't compete. "I don't
know," Pegram said prior to race one
on what his problems were with the
new EBR. "The bike's not running
right. We're way down. We've just
got some problems and we need to
figure it out. It's just not running right.
We're down 15 mph on Cory's bike
right now [Cory West is also riding
an EBR in AMA Superbike]. We've
got some data from last year, but it
doesn't make sense why this bike…
it's just a weird deal. We can't figure
it out. Our best was 182 mph and
Cory did 197 and the fastest was 205
mph. So we're 23 mph down."
After the race on Saturday, Pegram
said. "We just got through the day.
We had a bad weekend. Little things
and had bunches of problems. To-
day we just got through it. I jumped
the start and that gave us a 10-sec-
ond penalty. I ran off the track twice
because we had to try whole differ-
ent electronics. We learned a lot of
stuff and we'll be ready when we get
to the road courses for sure.

Hayes (4) tried to make
a break for it in Friday's
race, but the other
three caught up.
