AMSOIL AMA GRAND NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY SERIES PRESENTED BY MAXXIS
VOL. 51 ISSUE 10 MARCH 11, 2014 P91
ing a couple of big names that
graduated to the XC1 ranks this
season, the Pro Lites division is
stacked with solid veteran riders
and up-and-coming talent. KR4
Performance's Shane Hufford
was running the race of his ca-
reer by leading most of the way
after grabbing the $100 DigitalOf-
froad.com XC2 Holeshot Award.
But Raines Riding University/
OffRoadViking.com/Yamaha's
Ricky Russell made a run to the
front. The muddy course, how-
ever, created a race of survival,
and Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise KTM
Race Team's Rory Mead, who
was barely even hanging in the
top five early on, steadily worked
his way forward and snagged the
lead on the next-to-last lap. Like
Mullins in XC1, Mead's patience
and tenacity paid off with a win.
Ricky Russell was second and
Hufford nearly collapsed of ex-
haustion at the finish, but still
took third in the class.
Reigning XC2 Pro Lites Cham-
pion Grant Baylor ran into some
issues early on but the Factory/
FMF/KTM rider was able to sal-
vage some points with a sixth
place in the class.
The 250 A class saw a great
battle between Indiana's Austin
Lee and Pennsylvania's Craig
Delong all afternoon. Delong
captured the class win and 16th
overall to earn the American Kar-
go Top Amateur Award.
In the two-hour 10 a.m. race,
the all-new WXC Women's Pre-
mier class went to Factory FMF/
KTM's Kacy Martinez, with Mandi
Mastin and N-Fab/AmPro Yama-
ha's Jessica Patterson rounding
out the podium.
Missouri's Rick Matteson, Su-
per Senior A class winner, put
in a solid two-hours to capture
his first-ever 10 a.m. overall vic-
tory, edging out Martinez in the
second spot. Ohio's Troy Stanley
came in as the runner-up in the
Super Senior A Class, rounding
out the podium with a third overall
finish.
In the 8 a.m. Youth race, Flor-
ida's very own Jesse Ansley took
his first-ever Youth overall win,
while also securing a big victory
in the 85 (12-13) Class. Alabama's
Kyler Godwin claimed the Super
Mini (14-15) Class win and sec-
ond place overall, followed by
Brayden Coler with third overall
and second place in the Super
Mini (14-15) division. CN
