mounted rivals but just out of the
dust, knowing that they didn't
have to pass them to win.
Axel Pearson was a last-minute
replacement for Justin Morrow,
Burson's usual teammate, since
Morrow was sick and unofficially
led on time after taking the first
leg aboard their Countrywide Es-
tate Planning/FMF/Klim-spon-
sored 498 RR. He was second
off the line.
Burson then took over but
soon ran into problems that
dropped them back to third, say-
ing, "Axel put in a good [loop] and
gave me the bike. I just kept rid-
ing, trying to catch Ryan's dust.
Right towards the end I started
catching him and I got pretty
close, but then I swapped and I
tagged a rock and it loosened the
banjo bolt on the [rear] brake and
I didn't know what was wrong so I
pumped all the fluid out.
"We tightened it and hoped
that it would pump back up, but it
didn't on Axel's loop, so he rode
the whole second loop with no
[rear] brake."
They eventually replaced the
entire brake system, which al-
lowed them to get back up to
speed, but the time they'd lost
locked them into their eventual
third-place finish.
After being eighth bike off the
line, the Zip-Ty Racing Husqvar-
na pair of Ty Davis and Kellon
Walch delivered the winning ride
in Over 30 Pro by finishing fourth
overall in 3:38:32 aboard their
Ame Grips/Torco Oils/X Brand
Goggles FC 450. A few minutes
later in 3:41:14, Ryan Smith came
through on his City Service/First
Mortgage/Rick's Custom Shut-
ters YZ250. After partner Nic
Garvin crashed heavily on his first
stint yet still got to the pit, Smith
essentially soloed to the 250cc
Pro win after defending series
class champs Curtis Bradley and
Jeremy Purvines DNFed with a
clutch issue on their Purvines
Racing Beta.
