ohnson Valley in California
erupts into an off-road Mec-
ca for nearly two weeks—
with thousands of dirt mongers
and millions of dollars worth of
toys nestled into a makeshift
nomad city in the middle of the
desert. If there was a Burning
Man-like gathering for off-road
enthusiasts, two and four wheels
alike, the King of the Hammers
and King of the Motos is such
the place.
To kick off the weeklong bevy
of events, Ultra4 Racing, along
with the guided help and course
design by Jimmy Lewis, not to
mention oodles of volunteers,
helped put on one of the most
treacherous, extreme enduros
on the West Coast. Lewis cre-
ated the idea of the King of the
Motos, a spinoff of the King of
the Hammers truck event, and it
is now in its third year. The format
has evolved into a two-day event
with qualifying on day one and a
two-stage race on day two. The
race is loosely designed around
the premise that a slew of rac-
