CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "I love it and ride it often. Does that make me a hipster?" The Hipsters I hate hipsters ("Hooligan Hoedown," Issue 5, Febru- ary 4) and I hate the "bikers" who say they hate hipsters, but look, act, dress and drink the same as the real hipsters do. The custom culture is now the "norm" when it has always been the counter to it. Thanks for ruining it... I hope your XS650 with the shade tree welded-on hard tail doesn't fall off on your way to the coffee shop. Dale Rush Via Facebook The Hipsters II This is why I love the bikes and the life, but not the "scene." I always wanted a classic Triumph Bonneville - ever since I was a kid. After a lifetime of riding racing and wrenching, eventually I ended up with one. I love it and ride it often. Does that make me a hipster? James Thomas Via Facebook Wrong Word? First rule of thumb when using foreign-language words or phrases (or letting your writ- ers use them) is to understand what they mean. In the latest issue of Cycle News, Michael Scott uses the word "untermenschen" to refer, presumably, to MotoGP backmarkers. I have no idea why he'd reach for German rather than simply calling them "underdogs," but in German, the word means "subhuman." More importantly, it is also the word the Nazis used in refer- ence to the non-Aryan peoples they tried to exterminate. It's a loaded term, at least to those who have knowledge of his- tory, and a meaningless one to those who don't. Jackie Jouret Mill Valley, CA From Michael Scott… "I was amused by your notion that I chose the word 'unter- mensch' unwittingly. I am mortified that anyone might think it was chosen for its Nazi connotations. I hasten not only to disabuse them of this, but also to apologize unreservedly for contributing to their confusion. The formal concepts of Ubermensch and Untermensch go back much further than the Nazis, to the philosophy of Nietsche, and in the context of a Grand Prix grid are obviously used for hu- morous effect. In your case, unsuccessfully."… Editor German Sales Reading the article on Ger- many's statistically insignificant revival (In The Wind, Issue #5, February 4), I was reminded of something I read about the EU passing legislation last year to require all motorcycles be Euro4 standard by 2016 and Euro5 by 2020. The effect this will have will be significant and global spillover unavoidable. Rather than go any further I'll just post the link to where it can be read about further. http:// transportpolicy.net/index. php?title=EU:_Motorcycles:_ Emissions Stephen Hagberg Houston, TX Trey Canard To Return I don't know anyone that doesn't want to see this likable young man back on the track other than his competition. I look forward to seeing Trey Canard back in action. Gregory Eddinger Via Facebook Dave Jordan Sr. "If we learned one thing in those early years, it was never to put pressure on an amateur racer," Dave Jordan Sr. once said. "Just pat them on the back and tell them to have a good time." Words of wisdom. Jack Dannenberg Via Facebook Letters to the editor can be sent to voices@cyclenews.com.
