(Left) Morgan Crawford liked the
technical course on his agile 250.
(Below left) Last year's Vet Expert
Champion Dan Capparelli moved up
to the Pro ranks this year.
(Below) Arm pump negated Ryan
Smith's great start, but he was able
to make up for lost time and claim
eighth overall.
After an okay start Gary Sutherlin worked into second place
for a while, but as he closed on
Ramirez about halfway through
the race, his MotorcycleSuperstore.com/Bonanza Plumbing/
Fly Racing KTM 450 XC-F clattered to a halt with terminal en-
gine failure. The former magazine
test bike had momentarily seized
several miles earlier, but the noises it made this time signaled that
he'd just become a spectator.

KX450Fmounted Ricky Brabec served
notice that his return to the nationals is to be taken seriously by
taking over second at that point.
However, breaking the front
brake caliper off followed by wiping off the tip of his brake pedal

pace and he limped in for fifth.

Briefly...
a few times in the AMA Youth National Hare & Hound Series, winning the
Super Mini 12-15 class three times
and getting second twice. This year,
he's moving up to the big bikes full
time and seemed to have no problem
transitioning as he won the 200cc
Expert division, finishing 14th overall
on his YZ125.
Among those in attendance to cheer
Ivan Ramirez on to his first National
triumph were Kurt Caselli's mother,
Nancy Caselli, and his fiancée,
Sarah Jean White.
This Winter Classic may go down in
history as the toughest yet. In addition to the 184 finishers, 180 starters
did not see the finish line.
Most of the Johnny Campbell Racing Honda team that won the Baja
1000 showed up in Lucerne, though
they were only spectating. Mark
Samuels and Colton Udall ran
around on their old Hondas, but David Kamo had a new KTM 450 XC-F.
Honda-mounted Tatum Sik completed the 80 miles in five hours,
38 minutes and 57 seconds to win
Women's A. Last year's Women A/B
winner Rily Ellinger settled for second in 6:14:42 aboard her new Kawasaki with defending class champ
Maggie Pearson the third and final
class finisher in 6:55:09.
