As part of the celebration, the Anaheim II track was designed after the 2001 Anaheim track, signifying the "changing of the guard," when Ricky Carmichael came on the scene, ending Jeremy McGrath's run as Supercross Champion. Some of the race teams joined in on the fun by giving their bikes the retro look. The Toyota/Yamaha/N-Fab/JGRMX Team bikes where decked out in yellow and black of the 1970s and early '80s YZs, and Justin Barcia's factory Honda had the old-school factory look of the late '80s. His Muscle Milk Honda featured a red frame with a blue seat. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Darryn Durham crashed in practice and was forced to sit out the rest of the night with a slight concussion. "I'm gutted I can't be out there alongside my teammates, but I took a hard hit and my health is the most important thing," said Durham. "I hope I can get back out there next weekend, but I'll have to take it day-by-day." Team manager Mitch Payton seemed to think that he'd be good to go next week in Oakland but that could change.
