VOL. 50 ISSUE 50 DECEMBER 17, 2013 P211
LOOKING BACK
I'd be amiss not to mention
Kurt Caselli in this space. He
was also a champion this year,
winning the Hare & Hound title
again before tragically losing his
life in Baja. Kurt was also on the
verge of big things in rally racing.
He will be missed.
If a flat track racer is going to
return to the top of the heap and
join the likes of Scott Parker and
Ricky Graham as a Cycle News
Rider of the Year, chances are
that rider is going to be Brad
Baker. At just 20 years of age,
Baker won the AMA Grand National Championship and was
rewarded with the factory ride in
flat track – Harley-Davidson. Ask
anyone who has been around
the sport for a while and they
will tell you that Baker is the real
deal.
In AMA road racing, Josh Herrin and Cameron Beaubier both
won titles for Yamaha. Herrin
took the AMA Superbike crown
and will head to Europe in 2014
to race Moto2; and Beaubier
won the Daytona SportBike title
and will move to Superbikes in
the coming season as he takes
over for Herrin at Graves Yamaha.
One thing is certain about the
season past and that's the simple fact that youth was served.
Just look at when these kids
were born: Herrin (1990), Russell (1990), Tomac (1992), Beaubier (1992), Baker (1993), Marquez (1993).
Seems the kids are most definitely all right. CN
