VOL. 50 ISSUE 50 DECEMBER 17, 2013 P211 LOOKING BACK I'd be amiss not to mention Kurt Caselli in this space. He was also a champion this year, winning the Hare & Hound title again before tragically losing his life in Baja. Kurt was also on the verge of big things in rally racing. He will be missed. If a flat track racer is going to return to the top of the heap and join the likes of Scott Parker and Ricky Graham as a Cycle News Rider of the Year, chances are that rider is going to be Brad Baker. At just 20 years of age, Baker won the AMA Grand National Championship and was rewarded with the factory ride in flat track – Harley-Davidson. Ask anyone who has been around the sport for a while and they will tell you that Baker is the real deal. In AMA road racing, Josh Herrin and Cameron Beaubier both won titles for Yamaha. Herrin took the AMA Superbike crown and will head to Europe in 2014 to race Moto2; and Beaubier won the Daytona SportBike title and will move to Superbikes in the coming season as he takes over for Herrin at Graves Yamaha. One thing is certain about the season past and that's the simple fact that youth was served. Just look at when these kids were born: Herrin (1990), Russell (1990), Tomac (1992), Beaubier (1992), Baker (1993), Marquez (1993). Seems the kids are most definitely all right. CN 40 Years Ago January 8, 1974 Our "giant," 80-page year-end issue featured a couple of very cold-looking dirt bikes on the cover... We profiled Al Eames and Giacomo Agostini... We also took a spin on the works Montesa 360 motocrosser, Roger DeCoster's works Suzuki RN370, and Brad Lackey's works 450 Kawasaki motocrosser... We took a look at some of the highs and lows in motorcycling of 1973. 30 Years Ago January 11, 1984 We honored some of the heroes of 1983 on the cover of Cycle News in our year-end issue. Freddie Spencer, Shawn Moran, Randy Goss and David Bailey were illustrated... Kenny Roberts was named the 1983 Cycle News West Rider of the Year... Cycle News visited the headquarters of one of the first major privateer motocross teams - Team Tamm. We said that their effort "just might change the motorcycle racing industry around." 20 Years Ago January 5, 1994 We had it easy in 1993. Naming Ricky Graham as the 1993 Cycle News Rider of the Year was a no brainer. The Dirt Track champ was featured on the cover 20 years ago... We also featured interviews with three-time World champ Wayne Rainey, Supercross champ Jeremy McGrath, AMA Superbike champ Doug Polen, 500cc World champ Kevin Schwantz and Hare & Hound champ Danny Hamel... Ty Davis won the Laughlin Hare Scrambles. 10 Years Ago January 7, 2004 A smiling Matt Mladin was featured on the cover of Cycle News 10 years ago, and for good reason - he was named the 2003 Cycle News Rider of the Year... We featured interviews with World Motocross and ISDE Champion Stefan Everts, Hare & Hound Champion David Pearson, GNC Champion Chris Carr and 125cc MX Champion Grant Langston... Steve Hengeveld and Johnny Campbell combined efforts to win the Baja 1000... Matt Boni was one of the big winners at the Florida Winter Olympics.
