SOUTH BAY TRIUMPH STREET TRACKER
twin Öhlins rear shocks. The rear
wheel meanwhile is a 17-inch rear
Carrozzeria carrying a 254mm
EBC carbon steel disc with twopiston Brembo caliper.
Besides the paint scheme, another product of the SoCal custom car scene is the quilted seat,
hand-stitched in orange thread to
match the frame by Fast Ed's Interiors in nearby Gardena.
The taper-section handlebar
and adjustable brake/clutch levers are out of the Triumph Performance parts catalogue, same
as the triple clamps and bar-end
mirrors. However, whisper it quietly, but that minimalist headlamp
was sourced from… a Harley-Davidson Sportster.
To create a power-up paralleltwin motor to plug into this minimalist street tracker frame, Capri
acquired an Ebay refugee of a
2003-model Bonneville engine
and, while retaining the stock
crankcases, flywheel, dual counter-balancers and gearbox, fitted
a welded-up rebalanced crankshaft stroked by 6.3mm, still with
Triumph's traditional 360-degree
two-up throws (not the 270-degree version that masquerades
as a V-twin).
The stock cylinders have been
bored out to 92mm - the most
they can support without cracking the cylinder liner, says Capri,
having discovered this the hard
way in our second year on the
Salt Flats. The cylinder bores
have then been re-coated with
Nikasil, all of which punches the
original 790cc Bonneville motor
out to 988cc, with 92 x 74.3 mm
dimensions over the stock 86 x
68 mm build.
Carrillo steel rods carry threering flattop Arias pistons, each
fitted with custom wristpins that
are 40 percent lighter than stock,
and offset to minimize piston
slap by countering the effects
of the light slipper pistons' ultra-
