a rock or a tree branch. It kicked
me sideways off the course and
into the bushes and rocks. I hit
something and I was done. I
hurt my shoulder, my ankle and
my knee. The helicopter landed
and our medic tended to me and
Steve [Hengeveld] had to hop on
the bike. He did a fantastic job
riding the rest of my section for
over 100 miles. I tore the bike
up and he had to ride all that silt
stuff without pre-running it, and I
know that was gnarly, but he did
an awesome job.
"It's a huge effort to put this together and I'm really disappointed from a personal standpoint to have had the issues that I had
and put that much pressure on
the team," Bell added. "I underestimated the course a little bit
and I didn't think it was going to
be as brutal and demanding as it
P43
was. We were expecting a 51 or
52 miles-per-hour average and
the lead team was 47 mph. We
were well under that at 43 mph.
It just shows how brutal this race
was and how technical it was."
Third overall went to the winning Class 30 entry of Francisco
Arrendondo, Ryan Dudek, Chris
Haines, Scott Myers and Brian
Pinard.
Scott Yenzer, Shihab Alireza,
Alexander Smith had quite
the battle for the inaugural
SCORE Ironman win, but
he ended up prevailing and
being the only finisher out
of nine starters, completing
the 883 with a time of
27:04:50. That was faster
than some of the teams.
