T
he celebration was short
lived for the winning JCR
Honda Team. The red
squad, made up of David Kamo,
Tim Weigand, Colton Udall and
newcomer Mark Samuels, was
JCR Honda's David Kamo held
a slim 21-second lead about 705
miles into the race, the team having
battled back and forth all night
and into the day. Despite all four
team members riding with injuries
and a late-race broken front wheel,
they ended up winning the race as
well as the SCORE Championship,
though no one felt like celebrating
after rival and friend Kurt Caselli's
fatal crash while leading.
the first to cross finish line in the
early evening hours on Saturday
to claim Honda's 17th straight and
24th all-time win in the Baja 1000.
It was also Weigand's third career
win in the 1000, the second for
Kamo and Udall, and the first for
Samuels.
The team overcame plenty
of adversity during their 18-plus
hours on the bike, including having to deal with injuries to all four
of its team riders and a damaged
wheel that almost had them conceding the race. They completed
the 883-mile run in 18 hours, 29
minutes and 14.240 seconds with
an unusually low speed average
