for Russell. But instead of panicking or getting flustered by the
mistake, Russell kept his cool
and concentration and slowly
made up for the deficit that he put
upon himself. He actually caught
everyone, including Mullins, and
held the lead after the first lap.
But Mullins was right behind him.
The race was on.
The two KTM pilots battled
back and forth. Mullins held the
point by less than two seconds
over Russell after lap two. On lap
three, Russell moved back into
the lead and never really looked
back after that, though Mullins
kept the pressure on him for quite
some time.
Russell inherited some breathing room when Mullins flubbed a
hillclimb and had to make a sec-
ond attempt. As a result, Mullins
trailed Russell by 28 seconds after
the sixth and penultimate lap. And
it would only get worse for Mullins. Russell turned it up a notch
on the final go-around and put a
fork into the 2013 Championship
after taking the checkered flag
36 seconds ahead of Mullins.
