"It's a full moon, first of all, so
we knew some weirdness would
go on, for sure," Stewart said. "I
thought for sure that they fixed it
[the starting gates] last year. They
had it happen last year, then they
had it happen this year. Then it
happened again. So it's twice on
one. I pulled the holeshot and I'm
just like, 'Dude, did I waste my
good start?'"
With the natives growing restless – boos filling the cold desert
air – the third time proved to be
the charm, and both gates fell
properly. And as it turned out,
Stewart had wasted his good
start, as he got a terrible jump on
the right side and was immediately swallowed up by the pack.
The two Ryans – Villopoto
(qualified first) and Dungey (qual-
ified eighth) – led the way onto
the stadium floor, and Villopoto
quickly snatched the lead over
